Year 1

The move to Year 1 brings with it another big change for the children. Moving away from the smaller building used for the Foundation Stage, they join the rest of the school for their class work and break times in the main building! It is, of course, a priority to ensure that the transition runs as smoothly as possible for all our pupils.

Although their environment changes, active learning remains an important part of their school day in order to help them understand their surroundings and prepare for later in life. Free play, however, is limited in Year 1 as they knuckle down to some bigger challenges, although they continue to be stimulated by games and songs to motivate their learning, of course!

Whole Foods Project

Our pupils – along with two other local schools – take part in the Whole Foods Project. The aim of the project is for pupils grow and sell the summer produce that they nurture and harvest in the preceding months in order to raise money for the school!

We sell a wide range of products – from jams and sauces, to chutneys – most of which sell out within the hour.

The proceeds of this fun day out goes to improving healthy eating within the school and is an excellent opportunity to introduce the younger children to fundraising; something so important to the school.

In the Key Stage 1 playground, there is a small vegetable patch that belongs to the green-fingered children of Year 1!

Growing all kinds of vegetables here over the course of the year – from carrots and cabbage to potatoes and broccoli - our pupils are encouraged to take them home or enjoy them together in class!
